We are overloading our atmosphere with carbon dioxide, which comes from the fossil fuels we burn for energy -coal, natural gas and oil- as well as the gradual loss of the Earth's rainforests due to deforestation, mainly in the tropics. This carbon dioxide forms a kind of “white blanket” which traps the heat from the sun and steadily drives up the planet’s temperature.
Some consequences of global warming are already having significant and harmful effects on our health, our environment, and our communities: sea level rise is accelerating, the number of dangerous heatwaves is increasing, large wildfires are becoming more common, and extreme storms with subsequent floods are affecting many areas, whereas severe droughts are occurring in others.
Mother Earth is saying something with all this record heat, drought, storms and fire. She is warning us of the terrible consequences that interferring with nature in the way man is doing can bring about. And these consequences will continue to intensify unless we take immediate action. If we try to become more ecological in our domestic habits and daily routine and spur the adoption of cleaner energy sources, we will still be in time to save the earth and offer a better world to the future generations.
